Defense mechanisms are solidly defined by Freud and his daughter, Anna, who published more distinct descriptions of the mechanisms the ego uses as defense in The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense, published in 1936 (2013). One of the strengths of the use of these mechanisms is that they are also neatly packed away in distinct definitions, all with two commonalities that hold the theory together: defense mechanisms are unconscious behaviors and they are the mind’s tool for falsifying reality in order to not have to face it head-on (2013). One might argue as a weakness of Freud’s work, however, that defense mechanisms need not be negative, though the majority of the time they are applied as such. The Five Factor Model offers the result of that development in the form of five neatly packed dimensional labels, and finally Defense Mechanisms offer an analysis of the actions of a killer versus his personality – the why of his independently chosen life events. These analytical tools cannot be compared and contrasted except by background, that is to say, how the three were developed independently and are well-established psychological tools. Otherwise they serve very different purposes that add up to a full picture once applied, which is what the next sections will offer. Basics of Joseph Paul Franklin’s Legacy Joseph Paul Franklin is known for the murder in cold blood of over 12 people and the robbery of at least four banks, though the full extent of his crimes are somewhat of a mystery.
